Holy week, known as Semana Santa in Spain, is here and there are various religious traditions celebrated throughout week, leading up to the grand finale on Good Friday from 8pm in Dalt Vila. As the sun goes down, Ibiza town closes many of its streets for several hours so hundreds of penitential processioners dressed in nazarenos (traditional flowing robes and tall pointy hats) can carry enormous effigies of Jesus and the virgin Mary, along with a giant wooden crucifix, throughout the cobbled calles, stopping off at every church in town before returning to the Cathedral for a special mass, It’s one of the most spectacular and reverent displays of community and history you’ll ever see in Ibiza – traffic is hefty and parking can be tricky, so plan your route in advance and head into town early to get a good viewing point.
