The art of self-care – Open Spa at Ibiza Gran Hotel

Words Danni Landa

From ancient salt flats and sensory body rituals to advanced skincare and a world-class water circuit, the experts at Ibiza Gran Hotel provide the ultimate in mind, body, soul and skin care to their clients.

For many years, the itineraries of Ibiza holidaymakers were filled with beach-hopping, boat days, watersports, visits to gourmet restaurants and high-end beach clubs, and of course, nights spent on the island’s dazzling dancefloors. These days however, many visitors to the island are making self-care a top priority when planning their Ibiza visits, which means putting a trip to Open Spa – the ultra-luxe spa and wellness centre located within the stunning Ibiza Gran Hotel – at the very top of their to-do lists.

Situated in the heart of the sophisticated Marina Ibiza district, just minutes from Ibiza town and the superyachts bobbing in the harbour, this bastion of luxury and style was the very first hotel on the island to receive the much-coveted Grand Luxe designation. Every year sees Ibiza Gran Hotel evolve to match the high expectations of its discerning clientele and this year, part of that evolution includes an update to the treatment cabins at Open Spa – the finishing touch in the final phase of its full renovation by Sandra Tarruella Interioristas. Soft, wood tones complement a calming, neutral colour palette, softly illuminated by Ibiza’s golden sunlight streaming through opaque curtains – this ultra-indulgent spa has never looked, or felt, better.

Beyond the aesthetics, the team behind Open Spa are dedicated to providing the ultimate in mind, body, soul and skin care to their clients. This year sees the introduction of a new signature spa experience – one that is as innovative as it is fun, extending far beyond the spa itself. The Ibiza Salt Journey is a multi-sensory voyage – a truly unique and Ibiza-inspired approach to wellness. Guided by the team from specialist hiking outfit, The Other Side, the two-hour encounter begins at the stunning and ancient salt flats on the island’s south coast, where the rose-tinted, shimmering salt pans of Ses Salines provide an ethereal backdrop to learn about the history of the salt trade in Ibiza while taking in some gentle exercise, fresh, sea air and maybe even snapping some pics of the island’s flamingos before returning to Open Spa for the second segment of this remarkable experience.

Salt has long been used in skincare, in addition to medicinally, as it supports nerve function, muscle recovery and joint health. Drawing on the restorative powers of this white gold, the expert practitioners at Open Spa have developed a 50-minute salt exfoliating contour treatment that is the perfect relaxing yin to your active hiking yang. A blend of sea salt, lime and ginger is combined with coconut, bergamot and sweet almond oils before being applied in deep, broad strokes across the body, designed to smooth, stimulate and illuminate the skin. Dead skin cells are gently removed while the natural oils nourish and revitalise. Finally, a rich, frangipani-scented cream leaves your body feeling soft, radiant and renewed.

The Ibiza Salt Journey experience continues into its third and final stage at MUSA, the chic, up-scale lobby bar sitting adjacent to La Gaia, Ibiza Gran Hotel’s signature Michelin-starred restaurant. Here, feeling completely refreshed, you’ll sit down with head bartender Dani Martínez for a one-hour masterclass in cocktail making. He’ll reveal his secrets while exploring the mixological benefits of salt. Guests will have the chance to craft and enjoy their very own cocktail creation, bringing a celebratory end to an extraordinary day, uniting land, body and taste. And of course, there’s always the possibility to order another round…

While the Ibiza Salt Journey is definitely one of the more unique ways to enjoy the island, guests and visitors are also encouraged to take advantage of everything Open Spa has to offer. Comprising four distinct areas across 1,300m2 – RitualsAqua SpaGym & Wellness and Open Beauty by Maisolence – there is truly something for everyone. Open Beauty is a beautiful salon space, offering an array of pampering services including an expert colourist to get your shade picture-perfect – add on a lip and face mask, manicure and pedicure while you wait. There’s also eyelash care and brow shaping, plus hair cuts, blow-dries and glow-ups from the hotel’s professional hair and make-up artists, in addition to old-fashioned gentlemen’s shaves.

Flooded with natural light and boasting garden views, the Gym & Wellness area is kitted out with all the latest equipment and for guests of Ibiza Gran Hotel, a Technogym Training Kit can even be brought directly to your room for added privacy. Chromecast delivers a virtual personal trainer or live one-on-one sessions can be booked with the resort’s experts. Yoga and Pilates are enjoyed in personalised sessions in a dedicated open-air space while a series of guided hikes is the perfect way to simultaneously see the island and maintain fitness levels. The team are always on-hand to develop bespoke routines that account for each client’s needs and goals.

Open Spa is the most renowned wellness destination on the island, and it all starts with its famous water circuit, Aqua Spa. Sunlight streams through a large picture window featuring a stunning mural painted by Spanish artist Miguel Gómez Losada. Heated hydromassage pools boast jets and waterfalls, a contrast path helps with circulation and promotes longevity, as does the ice lounge, while a steamy hammam, sauna and aroma showers aid in muscle healing and provide a sense of general wellbeing. This complete sensorial journey is accompanied by a menu of exquisite rituals and treatments, where wellbeing is approached as a quiet ceremony designed to reconnect and nourish.

In the revamped treatment cabins at Open Spa, every moment is designed to restore balance through touch and tranquillity. Signature experiences range from the Nourishing Ritual, a 100-minute treatment combining marine exfoliation, herbal poultices, therapeutic massage and skin-nourishing therapies, to the Restorative Ritual, which focuses on releasing muscular tension and calming the nervous system via targeted bodywork and cervicocranial techniques. A collection of massages caters to different needs, from Thai-inspired stretching and deep tissue recovery to reflexology, pre-natal care and personalised experiences incorporating hot stones, CBD oil and muscle-relieving balms.

Facials at Open Spa blend advanced skincare with restorative practices, using renowned brands such as Anne SemoninVoya and Elemis to address everything from hydration and purification to sculpting and age-reversal. Guests can choose from tailor-made skincare programs designed for their specific needs, including cryotherapy-enhanced facials with lifting massage techniques, or mineral-rich marine protocols that harness the curative properties of seaweed and algae. For those seeking an extra boost, LED light therapy can be incorporated to support cell renewal, calm inflammation and enhance luminosity, leaving the complexion refreshed, balanced and visibly revitalised.

Whether booked as a reviving pause between beach days, a full reset after a night out or a dedicated day of self-care, Open Spa brings a sense of calm to all those who step through its doors. From the salt flats of Ses Salines to the iconic water circuit, treatment cabins, beauty salon and fitness spaces, every element has been designed to help guests and visitors return to themselves – and, most likely, return to Open Spa year, after year, after year…
