Making a splash in Ibiza – Della Vite

White Ibiza creative director Kristie Rogers sits down with Della Vite co-founders Poppy and Chloe Delevingne as they take a mini break in a White Ibiza Villa to toast to the successful launch of their Prosecco brand in Ibiza.

Entrepreneurial, fashionable and curious by nature, the Delevingne sisters – philanthropist and scientist, Chloe, model and actor, Poppy, and supermodel and actor, Cara – have always felt a strong connection to the Mediterranean island of Ibiza. Chloe recalls her very first trip as a toddler with her globe-trotting parents, before both her sisters had even been born; Poppy has been frequenting the island regularly since the age of 15; and Cara chose Ibiza as the location of her milestone 18th birthday in 2014. It made perfect sense for the talented trio to introduce their award-winning Prosecco brand, Della Vite – first launched to great acclaim in the UK in 2020, followed by the US in 2021 – to the island when expanding into Europe. Is there anywhere more appropriate to drink bubbles on a boat, in glamorous beach clubs or by the pool in your beautiful villa?

“I feel electric when I arrive in Ibiza,” says Poppy, as she casually flops down on a plush sofa overlooking the iconic rock formation of Es Vedrá. “The feeling you get is quite bubbly and butterfly-ish, and instantly I feel quite charged.” She and Chloe are here for a mini break with some friends (Cara – sadly for us, not for her – is busy at Paris fashion week so won’t be joining the party), staying in a beautiful Ibiza villa just as the island eases into the off-season. “I actually feel much calmer when I arrive,” adds Chloe, as she joins us in the early morning golden sunlight. “Perhaps it’s not everyone’s definition of calm, but I’m here without my children for a few days, so that makes it a relatively calm trip for me. Actually… I haven’t been to Ibiza at all since I had children. I was last here for our little sister’s 18th birthday party. I might be tempted not to go home!”

Della Vite is the premium vegan Prosecco brand launched by the Delevingne sisters, Chloe, Poppy and Cara, in 2020, now available in Ibiza.

Poppy too, finds her island experiences much calmer these days. “I think as you get older and you evolve, the island evolves with you,” she says, contemplatively. “Ibiza can be whatever you want it to be. Obviously, the island has always had that kind of more relaxed energy, meditative, sound bath vibe, which I never really tapped into in my 20s, but in my 30s, I’ve done a lot more of it. I feel like every time I come here now, I go on amazing hikes and little adventures and find these places that I never knew existed. I love discovering new things, although I still have my old favourite haunts, like I love the farm-to-table vibe of La Paloma, I like Macau for dinner and that lovely little beach restaurant with only about five tables at Cala Xuclar… now that’s really special. El Chiringuito is always fun for lunchtime party vibes, the food at Jondal is really, really good. And Benirrás – I love having pizza and Prosecco on the beach there at sunset.”

Speaking of Prosecco, this brings us to the reason we’re spending the day together. As part of the rollout of the premium Della Vite brand into Ibiza, the Delevingnes have teamed up exclusively with White Ibiza Villas to host a privately catered lunch in the villa with free-flowing fizz, fabulous food and an amazing location. The beauty of the 100% vegan certified Della Vite range is that there’s a flavour profile for everyone within the portfolio. The Treviso D.O.C, an extra dry, clean and bright drop with notes of gooseberry, and the rich and extra dry Superiore D.O.C.G, boasting hints of chamomile and crostini, were the first to be launched. Not long after came the beautiful blush-hued Treviso Rosé D.O.C, with notes of freshly crushed wild berries and rhubarb and finally, the latest addition to the portfolio is the non-alcoholic Zero – a sparkling rosé with notes of red berries, and low sugar and calorie content (a rarity in the 0% field).

A quick lesson in the art of creating Prosecco, for those who’ve been under the common illusion that she’s Champagne’s cheaper little sister. Produced in northern Italy, many vineyards still use ancient artisanal techniques, and the local community is so passionate about the quality of their wines, that most of the best Proseccos produced are kept within Italy. This explains why lesser quality blends are more available worldwide, along with the lack of well-known Prosecco brand names on the international market. For the Delevingnes, whose family fizz of choice has always been a high-end Prosecco, whether at brunch, over the holidays or at social events, the inspiration for the Della Vite brand stemmed from their desire to bring the finer Italian drops out of Italy, thus breaking the stigma associated with the effervescent drop. “There are so many bad ones out there, that are made cheaply,” explains Poppy. “We realised there was a huge gap in the market, and we’d always wanted to do something together as sisters, so we decided to go to Italy and team up with the experts and share good Prosecco with the world.”

The experts in question are the Biasotto family in Valdobbiadene – a family who have been making Prosecco using sustainable techniques for three generations. “It was one of the last places we looked,” recalls Poppy. “It really tied in beautifully with everything that we believed in, in terms of sustainability and the level of detail that goes into producing their Prosecco, from hand-picking the grapes and developing their own yeast for fermentation to using solar panelling and ageing the wine for 60 days rather than 30 for quality. Then, when we were leaving the vineyard, we saw a rock outside the entrance that said ‘Della Vite’ – which means ‘of the vine’ which is the Italian translation of our surname. It was so serendipitous – we took it as a sign that we’d found the right partners.” The sisters say the process has ultimately brought them closer together, allowing them to spend more time with each other. “We were forced to hang out together,” quips Chloe. “No, seriously, it’s a joy and there are so many elements of fun to it. Of course, we have serious meetings, and we need to get things done, but it’s so wonderful to be together.”

Poppy dubs Chloe ‘the brains of the bunch’ when it comes to their working relationship, recalling her wide-eyed reaction to seeing the Biasotto’s impressive labs for the first time. “I’m not the brains, I just loved the science of it all!” Chloe protests in earnest. “OK, chief taster and consumer then,” Poppy jokes and Chloe concedes. “Bubbles make me very happy,” she laughs. “The more bubbles, the more bubbly I am!” The three sisters all piled in on the development process, working closely with the Biasottos on creating the wines, and banding together on the design and development of the label-free bottles, which feature Poppy’s handwriting etched into the glass. It’s clear that Della Vite is very much a family business as opposed to a celebrity endorsed brand, which is evidenced by the sisters’ collective and obvious passion when they talk about the company and its future. “We’ve all been heavily invested right from the start,” says Poppy. “It’s our baby and we’ve nurtured it. I love the development side of things and I’m excited to see how far we can go.” At this point, Chloe chimes in: “Global domination!”

Della Vite is the perfect drink for sunny days by the villa pool, long lunches on the beach, rooftop sundowners or quintessential Ibiza boat days.

Ibiza, of course, is the brand’s next launchpad and as guests begin to arrive at the villa from various flights or other locations around the island, the sisters switch into host mode, decorating tables and topping up glasses of Della Vite while their private chef, Emiliano, whips up a Mediterranean feast. The bubbles sparkle in the afternoon sunlight, and Es Vedrá seems to float mystically on the horizon. “Just look at it,” says Poppy, gazing out over the Med. “It either makes you want to meditate or… maybe it sends you the other way! Bringing our brand here just feels like coming home. It ties in so well with the lifestyle here – it’s the perfect drink to have by the pool, to make cocktails with and I love the idea of someone going up to a bar and saying: ‘Can I have a bottle of DV?’ (which is what we call it!). The bigger the ice bucket, the better!” Chloe agrees. “The bottles are so beautiful sitting on a table – we think people will be proud to order it in hotels, restaurants, or to show it off on their boats and in their villas.”

The sun slowly starts to set, and each new pop of a DV cork brings fresh energy to the villa, with the sound of laughter and glasses clinking floating across the airwaves. The glamorous group convenes by the stunning pool to ponder plans for the evening ahead – will it be a cosy movie night, dinner and drinks in town, or a swing by Pacha for a quick dance? In true Ibiza style, anything could happen, as it does when Chloe spontaneously dives into the pool after reminiscing about Cara’s iconic 18th birthday party – an event which included a full family affair made up of luxe lunches and decadent dinners, a private villa party weekend with her A-list pals, beautiful boat days and a day-to-night dancing experience in the sand dunes in Playa d’en Bossa back in the days when Ushuaïa was still a little hut on the beach.

“Hmm, I’m not sure I want to go home now,” she says wistfully, emerging from the glistening water. “Maybe I’ll push for Ibiza to be the location for the annual Delevingne family vacation this summer.” Poppy, it seems, is already planning her next visit too. “I’d feel quite lost if I didn’t make a point of coming every year,” she says. “And now with DV, we have more of a reason to.” Chloe quickly counters: “It’s not work if you’re having fun, Poppy!” Salut to that!
