The bold and the beautiful – The Beach, Unexpected Ibiza

The bold and the beautiful – The Beach, Unexpected Ibiza

Words Tina Browning

Expect the unexpected at this stunning Playa d’en Bossa beachfront restaurant, from hedonistic breakfast feasts and epicurean adventures at lunch and much more.

It often feels like there are two sides to Playa d’en Bossa. There’s the glitz and glam of the roadside ‘strip’ – the flashy hotels, the legendary clubs and the blingy bars – and then there’s the iconic stetch of golden sand where some of the world’s finest beach clubs and restaurants attract visiting foodies and the who’s who of the jetset to indulge in world-class cuisine with that million dollar view. There’s one destination in Bossa, however, that bridges the gap between the bold and the beautiful: The Beach, Unexpected Ibiza, where anything is possible, everything is deliciously devourable and yet nothing is quite what you’d expect.

Part of Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Hotel and The Unexpected Ibiza Hotel, the beautiful beach restaurant is set on the shoreline just behind the famous dancefloor of Ushuaïa Ibiza. It possesses all the pizzazz of its namesake resort, plus the whimsy of the neighbouring beach club, and boasts culinary credentials that put it squarely on the must-visit lists of gourmands from across the globe. With row upon row of plush beach beds for service in the sand, plus a stylish white wood decked terrace dripping in bright bougainvillea and designed with larger tables and Mediterranean feasting in mind, The Beach, Unexpected Ibiza is a blissful place to while away the last days (and weeks) of summer.

There is something extremely satisfying about starting the day with a salty sea breeze caressing your face, watching the first blush of the day’s sunshine hovering on the horizon, and soaking in idyllic beach views before the hubbub of daily life commences. Surprisingly, very few restaurants on the east coast of Ibiza are open for breakfast, which makes The Unexpected Breakfast at The Beach, Unexpected Ibiza an impressive (and yes, quite unexpected!) way to ease into the morning. Open to the public (reservations are essential to score a seat), in addition to hotel guests, the restaurant opens from the peaceful hour of 8am and serves up one of the most lavish and unconventional brekkies on the island until 11am.

Go wild at the cheeky chocolate fountain, load up on a cornucopia of carbs (hello fresh pastries!), and watch wide-eyed as a cortador de jamón (master ham-carver) hand-cuts silky slices of 5 Jotas Iberian ham to order. Hop between the live cooking stations, where eggs (however you like ‘em) are hustled into being while you wait – top tip: the eggs Benedict here receive rave reviews. The Unexpected Breakfast at The Beach, Unexpected Ibiza is a culinary contradiction where the yin and yang of sweet and savoury reign supreme and each dish comes with a side of beach views, fresh coffee, tea, juice, and possibly a mimosa (or two). And remember, when it comes to breakfast on the beach in Ibiza, constraint is incredibly overrated.

Lunchtimes at The Beach, Unexpected Ibiza see the restaurant’s gastronomic approach pivot to a seafood-led, Mediterranean menu, where KM0 provenance, contemporary cooking and a little easygoing happiness is the name of the game from midday until 6pm. Take a table under the shade of the terrace, where expert waiters deftly weave their way through the restaurant with steaming pans of paella, fish and shellfish caught fresh that morning in Balearic waters, and expertly grilled, premium cuts of meat. But first, the obligatory rounds of cocktails and drinks – think refreshing strawberry daiquiris, a long Ibiza iced tea with an impetuous splash of Hierbas Ibicencas, chilled bottles of champagne or icy cold blush rosé – to sip on while perusing the beach restaurant’s extensive menu.

Starters and snacks at The Beach, Unexpected Ibiza are designed to be shared with friends, or perhaps scoffed solo depending on your mood (and hunger levels). ‘The Unexpected’ Salad is, as the name suggests, decidedly unconventional – mixing fresh prawns, tropical fruits, fresh greens, avocado, feta and pine nuts with lime and chia dressing. The homemade 5J croquettes are a house signature, the crispy twist on patatas bravas features mouthwateringly good, layered confit potato cooked in butter, with beef brava sauce, basil aioli, and soy-cured egg yolk. And there’s more: red tuna tartare with a side of French fries; heaped bowls of herbed mussels or albariño-infused clams; plus tasty light bites like pastor-style fish tacos with pineapple; a cheesy grilled chicken quesadilla and more.

Main courses focus heavily on fresh catches of the day – delicate sea bream, salty sea bass, a sweet salmon fillet and a piled-high seafood platter – or high-quality meats (the Wagyu burger has reached legandary staus) but the real star of the show at The Beach, Unexpected Ibiza is rice. Here, the impressive line-up of paellas includes plump scarlet prawns with cuttlefish and clams; luscious lobster with cuttlefish, prawns, monkfish, clams and mussels; or slow-cooked machete beef rib with mushrooms and demi-glace among others. Arroz aficionados adore the restaurant’s monthly paella fest, The Sunrice, where special guest chefs whip up their own take on Spain’s most beloved pans of plenty in live cooking shows – it’s laidback dining with a hefty dash of epicurean excess.

Desserts at The Beach, Unexpected Ibiza include the decadent gianduja, where Ecuadorian chocolate mousse is drenched in caramel toffee and hazelnut praline; and the classic South American cake, tres leches, along with healthy fresh fruit platters, a whole host of ice cream, sorbets and more – the perfect end to the perfect beach day. And while the day usually ends on that sweet note, and the sunbeds are slowly packed away as the sun begins to fade, there’s one exclusive night towards the end of the summer season where – as if by unexpected magic – the terrace remains open, by the light of the silvery moon and hundreds of flickering candles.

On Tuesday September 15, 2026, soundtracked by the waves lapping the shoreline, the gentle clink of glassware and the hum of the hungry habitué within, The Beach, Unexpected Ibiza hosts a very special six-handed dining experience. Bringing together the talented trio of Michelin-starred special guest chef Jorge Lengua (Llavor Restaurant, Oropesa de Mar)Adrián Paniagua, Executive Chef at The Beach, Unexpected Ibiza, and Gonzalo Cancelo, Pastry Chef at The Unexpected Ibiza Hotel, an extraordinary ten-course menu celebrating Mediterranean cooking traditions and putting an unexpected-yet-genius twist on some of Spain’s best loved dishes will be served from 8pm.

Without giving away too many spoilers, just imagine: an artisanal ensaimada, stuffed with fish sobrasada; a summer-fresh tostada of watermelon and tuna; vitello tonnato made with beef tongue, fusing the taste of the land and sea; a reinterpretation of the Ibicencan classic buillit de peix (fish stew); and a sweet and creamy take on the Catalonian-loved miel y mato (honey and fresh cheese). Each course is matched with champagne and wine from the best vineyards in Europe, and each of the chefs brings their own strand of foodie flair and imagination to the table (quite literally). From the hedonistic heights of breakfast and indolent, indulgent lunches to one-off gastronomic adventure beneath Ibiza’s inky night skies, The BeachUnexpected Ibiza is where boldness is embraced, beauty is everywhere and where you should, quite frankly, expect the unexpected.
