Ibiza Town
Teatro Pereyra
After a meticulous restoration, the iconic Teatro Pereyra has triumphantly reopened with a year-round entertainment programme designed to dazzle. From early morning coffee at Café Pereyra and life music after dark to state-of-the-art live music dinner show, Ibiza Hippie Heaven by Nacho Cana, the legendary entertainment venue is breathing new life into Ibiza’s old town.
Nestled beneath the historic walls of Dalt Vila in the heart of Ibiza’s old town, the stunning 125-year-old Teatro Pereyra has finally reopened its pistachio green wooden doors to an adoring public. Originally launched in 1898 by local visionaries Commander Pereyra, Abel Matutes and Josep Tarrés, the Ibiza entertainment venue’s original incarnation defied expectations and stood as a beacon for the island’s cultural scene for nearly a century, hosting dazzling ballroom dances, circus shows, musicals and banquets.
After closing down close to 40 years ago, it was a true labour of love that ensured this heritage building and cultural icon was meticulously restored to its former glory. Under the guidance of fourth-generation family member Pedro Matutes Barceló and renowned island architect Jordi Carreño of Estudiovila13, the Teatro Pereyra project took 17 years to complete and now the rose-hued façade is once again the pride of the island’s capital.
From the outside, Teatro Pereyra is spectacular. Step inside, and you’ll be dazzled by a nightlife venue that has echoes of the Moulin Rouge, a hint of rock and roll spirit, and nostalgic glamour. By day, Café Pereyra serves breakfast and lunch under the shade of the historic portico, while inside, the Sandoval & Compañia Room is a tribute to the love story of Commander Pereyra and his wife. Evoking the sultry vibes of 19th-century Cuba, this sophisticated lounge and cocktail bar enjoys access to the theatre’s alfresco balcony, and the in-house band keep locals and visitors entertained every night from 10.30pm.
It’s the venue’s signature live music dinner show – Ibiza Hippie Heaven by Nacho Cana – that has become the true star attraction within the three-storey main theatre room every night. Luxe red velvet curtains, intricately carved balustrades, Art Deco detailing, vintage illustrations and dramatic chandeliers set the mood, but the ultra-talented theatrical performers are, quite literally, the stars of the show.
Created by legendary songwriter and Teatro Pereyra artistic director Nacho Cano – the founder of Mecano, one of Spain’s most popular bands – the visionary maestro has dreamed up a dinner-show experience that retells Ibiza’s bohemian history through theatrical and interactive performances and spine-tingling live music that traverses countries, decades, and even musical genres. Enhanced by innovative stagecraft and chef Emiliano Cruceli’s island-inspired culinary creations, Ibiza Hippie Heaven is a sensory feast that brings the theatre’s storied past back to life.
With its rich history and newly invigorated spirit, Teatro Pereyra is guaranteed to once again become the epicentre of creativity and community in Ibiza, all year round. After the summer programming wraps up in October, the cutting-edge live music and entertainment venue is slated to host a year-round programme of interdisciplinary events featuring international and local artists, including cinema, performances, concerts, children’s activities and more. Breathing new life into the old town, this new era is only just the beginning of the rebirth of a cultural icon.
