MGAG Arquitectos
Talamanca-based MGAG Arquitectos reimagines Ibiza’s architectural heritage through award-winning hotels, villas and commercial projects. Balancing tradition with craft, innovation and an international perspective this team of professionals create beautiful spaces across Ibiza and beyond.
Ibiza’s contemporary architecture has always carried traces of the island’s design heritage. Even the most modern structures bear echoes of the past: whitewashed forms rising from rugged terrain, stonework recalling centuries of handmade walls and wood weathered by salt and sun. Using this legacy as a foundation, the island-based firm MGAG Arquitectos reinterprets those traditions for the present day. Founded by father and son Miguel García Quetglas and Andrés García Castiella, the practice blends decades of experience with a fresh perspective. Supported by a close-knit international team with roots in Greece, Poland and Spain, these dynamic Ibiza architects create work that honours the island’s past while shaping its future.
MGAG Arquitectos’ portfolio stretches from private residences hidden among pine-clad hills to urban apartment buildings and landmark hotels. They describe their approach as a deconstruction of the payesa tradition – using the historical palette of lime, stone and wood not to imitate the past, but to reinterpret it for modern sensibilities. Their unique design trajectory was recognised in 2023 with two prizes at the prestigious Rethinking the Future Awards, placing MGAG Arquitectos among the most respected architectural firms in Ibiza.
Residential projects reveal the breadth of MGAG Arquitectos’ style. Traditionally inspired homes such as Casa de las Salinas, Can Dulce and Can Vinya emerge seamlessly from the landscape, with cubic forms softened by tinted limewash, shaded patios designed for gatherings and interiors attuned to family life. In contrast, villas designed by these Ibiza architects such as Casa Triángulos, Shantaram House, Casa Serpiente and Casa H embrace bold geometries, sweeping curves and dynamic diagonals that reimagine the Ibiza villa for ultra-contemporary living. Here, the firm utilises exposed concrete, expertly imparting a raw elegance to these rigorously composed forms.
Among their most celebrated works is the five-star OKU Ibiza on Ibiza’s west coast. Here MGAG Arquitectos transformed a 1970s building near Cala Gració into a sanctuary inspired by the Japanese philosophy of wabi-sabi. Turkish marble, cedar wood and balanced geometries create spaces that feel both monumental and serene. Guests enter through a dramatic cube before moving into courtyards filled with shifting light, and finally to the island’s largest pool, stretching more than 50 metres. International recognition soon followed construction, with awards including the Hospitality Design Awards 2021 and the LIV Luxury Lifestyle Awards, shining. spotlight onto these Ibiza architects on a global stage.
At another acclaimed hotel, Bonito, also in the west of the island, the design carries a softer cadence with structures attuned to leisure and flow. The idea here was to instil a sense of natural rawness with exposed concrete the principle architectural protagonist softened by earthy colours and pleasing textures. The Ibiza architects have also refurbished two of the island’s most iconic names, Pikes Ibiza and Café del Mar, balancing preservation of identity with contemporary refinement. These commissions demonstrate how MGAG Arquitectos work with cultural memory and context, enhancing what exists while discreetly adapting it for today. From landmark institutions to boutique stays and stunning private homes, the studio’s portfolio underlines their standing as extraordinary and versatile architects. This adaptability – balancing tradition and innovation with craft and imagination – secures MGAG Arquitectos’ place among the leading Ibiza architects of today.
