Located within a disused carpenter’s workshop, concealed between warehouses and derelict plots in the Can Bufí industrial estate, sits La Carpintería. Its elegant patio leads to glass doors that open onto a light-filled exhibition space. This is the Ibiza art gallery attached to Ses Dotze Naus – an arts foundation and residency established by Ángeles Ferragut and her husband Simon Southwood. As an Ibiza art gallery shaping the island’s contemporary scene, Ses Dotze Naus brings residents and visiting artists together through provocative, thoughtful work.

The story of Ses Dotze Naus begins in 2016 with a week-long residency on the Ferragut family finca between Ibiza and Santa Eulalia. From above, bell tents scattered through the pines looked like twelve small sailing boats, which led Ángeles to recall the book Ibiza – La Nave de Piedra, (Ibiza – The Stone Ship). Moved by the metaphor of the island as a ship and inspired by the intrepid artistic sailors labouring away in their little bell tents, Ángeles decided to adopt the name Ses Dotze Naus – the twelve vessels – capturing that image, and the idea of an Ibiza art gallery moving people and ideas in convoy across sea and soil.

Programming at La Carpintería is vibrant, eclectic, and inclusive. Exhibitions have included a combined show from photographer Cristina Stolhe and ceramicist Andrés Izquierdo, whose collaboration offered a unique interpretation of Ibiza. Other shows and events initiated by Ses Dotze Naus have included sculpture, ceramics, photography, installation, performance, and tech-driven works. Acclaimed names, such as Nina Beier, Simon Dybbroe Møller, Mark Leckey, Rosa Tharrats and Lara Fluxà have appeared alongside rising voices that keep the Ibiza art gallery fresh and connected. With guided visits and activities bookending each exhibition and residency, Ses Dotze Naus is committed to opening the art world to everyone.

Serving as a nurturing hub for artists and art lovers, and an organisational structure to support both, this Ibiza art gallery and foundation is on a mission to foster dialogue between the island, local and international artists, building a bridge between contemporary creation and the island’s cultural and natural heritage. Simultaneously, Ses Dotze Naus supports artists and thinkers with space, time and tools, while also inspiring local audiences to explore, participate in and enjoy art. Under Ángeles Ferragut’s steady eye, the project continues to build links with institutions, cultural agents and friends of the island, strengthening a creative culture that keeps on growing.
