Editor's tip

Arrive early and stay late; Cala Conta is the beach where every single hour sees new beachside scenes unfold.

If there was a pageant to crown the most beautiful beach in Ibiza then according to island lore, Cala Conta would probably be odds on favourite to win the prize. Stunning in myriad ways (let us count them), and importantly for Instagram purposes, extremely photogenic, this west coast wonder is a well-known gem. Its reputation, of course, isn’t without merit, because the sand is soft and fine and the water, oh-so-clear. It’s the kind of paradise your imagination conjures during its deepest daydreams, attention lingering there for just that little bit longer than usual.

There are two separate sections to Cala Conta: one area that melts into sand dunes, and another that’s backed by rocky but relatively low cliffs. In the distance, a series of tiny islets dot the horizon, including Illa des Bosc and the larger island of Sa Conillera beyond. The currents can be quite strong here but capable swimmers often paddle across with a snorkel to explore the worlds created by underwater nooks and crannies.

Thanks to its west coast location, Cala Conta is also a fabulous spot for catching Ibiza’s famous sunset. It’s one of the busier places to watch day give way to night but few places can lay claim to such an electric atmosphere as the sun blazes its farewell trail than here. We recommend sticking around for it.

Who goes there?
Anyone in search of that quintessential Caribbean aesthetic, but in the Balearics. Families like it because the water is shallow enough for kids to play in; hot young things like it because it’s the perfect place for parading. Needless to say, it gets very busy indeed — in peak season sarongs are laid side by side with hardly a glimpse of sand between them. It’s a great melting pot of cultures though; a beach that really showcases Ibiza’s diversity and ability to give everyone a good time.

Best time to go?
If you want to stake a claim on some of that faultless sand, arrive early, or hang back until later in the afternoon. Cala Conta can be reached by car but the car park fills up quickly, so taking the boat from San Antonio can be a less stressful alternative. As mentioned, if you’re already at the beach then stay till sunset, it’s well worth the wait.

Where to eat and drink
Sunset Ashram has a prime spot overlooking Cala Conta and is steeped in island legend. It’s best to reserve a table for cocktails, lunch or dinner here, particularly at sunset when DJs soundtrack the spectacle. Meanwhile, Ses Roques and Restaurante S’Illa Des Bosc specialise in superb seafood and toes in the sand vibes.

White Ibiza loves
Follow the coastline round to the southern end of Cala Conta and you’ll stumble upon the smaller cove of Cala Escondida, a laid-back naturists’ spot that’s reached by steep steps from the top of the cliff. It’s home to an eco-chiringuito that serves fresh juices, healthy snacks and cocktails (bring cash because cards aren’t accepted), and is a great alternative sunset viewing point.
