WHEN TO VISIT

The island’s inner villages buzz with action all year long. Those with a penchant for furry friends will adore the annual blessing of the animals in Santa Gertrudis in October. Halloween is a serious affair in Santa G, as its lovingly known, with the square filling up with ghouls and ghosts of all ages and if you’ve got little ones in tow, don’t miss the delightful Santa Gertrudis fair in November, complete with whimsical rides, games, and local entertainment. Summer is all about twilight drinks, long dinners and late-night escapades.

MUST-SEE

A little-known monument in the island’s centre is Sagrat Cor de Jesús (The Sacred Heart of Jesus), soaring 23 metres high on a hill in Montecristo. Just like a miniature version of Brazil’s Christ the Redeemer, the views from its base are incredible. For tree huggers, there’s the magnificent Pi ver d’en Besuró on the back road between Santa Gertrudis and San Miguel – classified as a Notable Tree of Spain, she’s an enormous pine perfect for picnics. San Rafael is also home to iconic Ibiza nightclub Amnesia – the very birthplace of the Balearic Beat.

MUST-DO

The heart of the island is an adventure for your tastebuds with Santa Gertrudis boasting a plethora of delicious eateries. Additionally, you can craft a food-focused route down the famous ‘restaurant road’ but be sure to take detours for those out of the way delights – you never know what amazing culinary discovery is around the next bend, quite literally.

WHO YOU’LL MEET

A real melting pot of Ibiza society, you might find yourself chatting with a superstar DJ in a corner store, shouting a local farmer over a cortado in an old-school bar or crossing paths with a global entrepreneur on your morning walk. The central villages, a favourite among expats and young families, buzz with activity, and the renowned ‘restaurant road’ draws both tourists and locals eager to satisfy their discerning palates.
